THE CLIFTON NEIGHBORHOOD, while not a designated Historic District, offers so much to Newport’s rich and diverse History. Originally referred to as “Cliff-town” or “The Hill” Clifton was home to a multitude of immigrants who landed in Newport in the late 1800’s who wanted the closeness of the city while still living in the country. The addition of the railroad aided the early settlers of “The Hill” and began the establishment you can still see today.

Clifton was officially incorporated into the City of Newport between 1932 and 1936 and retains the hilly, tree lined terrain that attracted its original inhabitants.
